RECOM: Political oligarchs in the Western Balkans glorifying war criminals

Remembrance policies were in the hands of oligarchs using them for manipulation and glorifying convicted war criminals, said RECOM Reconciliation Network coordinator Natasa Kandić on 17 December.

“The glorification has risen to such heights that public spaces across the states of former Yugoslavia are filled with respect for people convicted of war crimes, genocide or joint criminal enterprises,” Kandić said at the opening of the Transitional Justice Forum in Belgrade. She has warned that the political oligarchs have managed to drag new generations into the crimes of the past.

The director of the Centre for Peace Policy, from Zagreb, Vesna Teršelić, said that the process of reconciliation was suspended politically, but not among citizens.

The RECOM (Regional Commission) Reconciliation Network is a regional coalition of non-governmental organisations and individuals pushing for a committee to be formed to establish the facts on the victims of the wars in the former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 2001.
